[Pee United Pbess Association.] GORE, March 8. James Caban •was convicted this morning of being in possession of a loaded revolver while drunk, and was fined £l. Caban, together with several others, had been participating in a keg of beer oh Satunlay night, and suddenly produced the weapon, which was taken from him before he could do any damage.

WANGANTJI, March 8. At the Police Court to-day three habitues of racecourses were charged with being idle and disorderly, and sentenced, two to three months' hard labor, and one convicted and ordered to come up when called on. The evidence of the police showed lhat they associated with racecourse "spielers," and had been seen engaged in illegal practices on the first day of the Wanganui races, where a great deal of pilfering was indulged in by the troublesome class.

CHRISTCHURCH, March 8. Alfred Bethord was sentenced to three months' imprisonment to-day, without the option of a fine, for selling whisky in Tuam street on Sunday morning without a license. Bethord's method is to hang about the street tiD. the thirsty ones ask where a drink is to be had, and then draw out a bottle. In this case he cold 5e worth of whisky to civilians.

INVERCARGILL, March 6. The Finance Committee recommend that the following be appointed valuators on behalf of the Corporation in respect of leases expiring on Juno 30:—Mr John Davie, Mr John Watson, Mr W. Reid, and Mr John Loudon. They recommend also that the Council's accident insurance business be handed to the New Zealand Insurance Company for the year 1909-10, with instructions to distribute the same equally amongst other companies doing similar business in the City.; that the fire insurance business of the Council he placed with tho New Zealand Insurance Company for the year J909-10, to be distributed by that company equally amongst other companies doing similar business in the City; that Parliament be approached by petition with a view of having the sections of the Local Bodies' Loans Amendment Act, 1903, referring to the investment of sinking fund with the Public Trustee, expunged, or tho whole Act repealed. They report that pay sheets and accounts amounting to £8,407 7s 3d have been passed for payment. GISBORNE, March 8. In the Supreme Court John James Isaac Todd, charged with the theft of £l3 from a man named Cooper at a hotel, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment.
