[Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHUItCH, May 29. The mayor yesterday performed the ceremony of turning the first sod in the work of constructing a reservoir at Cashmere Hills, Christchurch. for the highpressure water supply. The Mayor said that the scheme would involve an expenditure of £115.000. The reservoir would be 240 ft above the level of Cathedral square, and would be decked with ferro-concrete About 120 miles of pipes would be used in the reticulation. The whole work would be complete in seven months. WELLINGTON. May 29. Information received by the Tourist Department goes to show that the chamois presented to the Government bv the Emperor of Austria are doing very well in the Southern Alps, and appear'to be in the pink of condition. Their number has increased since they were liberated. AUCKLAND, Mav 29. Henry Godd, employed as a grader and tester at the Government Poultry Depot, was committed for trial on a charge of the theft of 150 dozen eggs. At the Supreme Court a Maori (Whara Hanga) was sentenced to two years for forgery and uttering.
