THE TRAINING SHIP SPARROW.

lire Government have deckled that the gunboat Sparrow, recently purchased for training boys for the navy and the mercantile marine, is to be placed in commission at once,. Tire crew will consist of between sixty and eighty boys, who must not be younger than twelve and older than fourteen. The Government will shortly invite applications for enrolment. The vessel is to be overhauled immediately, and her internal fittings altered to suit the requirements of the youngsters. It is intended that the boys shall have every opportunity of acquiring a knowledge o'f seamanship, and they will also be taught trades, while their ordinary education will also be looked after. When they have received a certain amount of training they will bo taken out for short cruises. Captain Hooper, R.N.R., late chief officer of the Hinemoa, has been appointed to the command of the training ship.
