DOCK TRUST.

The monthly meeting of the Trust was attended yesterday afternoon by Messrs E. 6. Alien, M.H.R. (chairman), A. Cable, E. Qodfrad,- F. G. Cray, W. Barclay, E. Knewstubb, arid the Ron. H. Gourley. Mr Isaac Stevenson was granted sir weeks’ leave of absence. Air R. M. Clark wrote apologising for his absence, and staled that as Ins term of office as president of the Chamber of Commerce would expire before the next meeting of the Trust, be desired to express his thanks to all the members of the Trust for their uniform courtesy and kindness.—Received. Mrs Seddon wrote conveying to the members of the Trust her grateful thanks for their kind message of sympathy to herself and family in their late bereavement.—Received. Mr W. Bastings wrote that he was desirous of having the electric light installed in his hotel, and would be pleased to have an estimate of cost from the Trust.—Referred to the Works Committee. Mr R. Hay, engineer to the Trust, wrote advising them to ask. Captain Watson to note if the Harbor Board were tipping their dredgings into the fairway of the now dock.—The Secretary stated that Captain Watson had seen that the dredgings were being deposited outside of the fairway of the. dock. Mr Hay reported that the work at the dock during the past month had consisted chiefly in excavation and stone cutting, and the contractor had also been employed strengthening his coffer dam and lowering pumps. Three shifts bad been employed in the excavation. In regard to the cement, he had taken a number of samples from the two shipments intended for the Trust, and the tests made were very satisfactory. The cement was fully in accordance with the specifications. The steamer Cape Corso, now duo, had another cargo of cement on board for the Trust (4,000 casks), and it would have to be stored by the contractor for the dock at his risk and expense. It would bo highly desirable if some of the material out of the dock excavation could be utilised for some useful reclamation instead of being tipped to “ spoil,” and if a rubble stone wall was put in across the bight near the rowing shed a considerable quantity of material could be used in the area between the wall and the road, and a useful piece of flat land thus obtained—about half an acre. This would be further improved by the dock face wall being extended to the line of entrance for a short distance and continued at right angles until it met the solid ground at the boat shod. It would be necessary to appoint an inspector as soon as possible. If the rubble wall was made 10ft wide for carts there would be about 1,500 yards of rubble, at a cost of 6s per yard, but this might be reduced if clay or rotten rock were obtainable near at hand, and an embankment of this material could then be roughly faced with loose rubble, of which about 300 yards would be sufficient, at a cost of about £220. —The report was adopted with the exception of the clause referring to the appointment of an inspector, which was referred to the whole of the Trust and the engineer. The Finance Committee recommended accounts amounting to £5,782 11s 2d for payment. The Committee further reported that there was a credit balance at the bank of £1,758 6s 9d to the Trust’s account ; also a credit balance to loan account of £5,863 6s 4d. The Committee recommended that the Trust place the sum of £7,000 to an account, to be called the new dock loan interest account, to provide for past and future payments of interest and other charges in connection with flotation of loans.—Approved. The Trust then went into committee. At a, later stage it was resolved that Mr A. Slinger be appointed inspector of works at a salary of £6 10s per week.
