The Union Company’s hnlk Woodlark, which has done good service at WeiImgton as a repository for coal for a numher of years, has been condemned. The old vessel played a prominent part in the early trade of the colony, and was in the distant past a trim little brig. The vessel was built at Dundee in 1870, and at the time of _ her launch she was of the following dimensions :—Length, 182 4ft • beam, 32.1 ft; depth. 19.2 ft. ’ Mr W. J. Gotten]], manager in 'Timaru of the New Zealand Shinning Company, anformed a representative of the 'Post’ that h© had jnst received a cable from headquarters stating that the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Shaw, tSaviU and Albion Compamr bavo agreed to provide a bi-monthly direct service between Timaru and London, oommenern" on Jnlv 31, with a Shaw-Savill boat. " Captain Fletcher, master of the Te Kapn, had a providential escape from the fate that overtook the men on the Karamea bar on Wednesday week last. He was in the boat with the men just prior to the accident, and thinking that five was rather a heavy load, and also wishing to have a look at the beacons, asked Captain Ftonerson to allow him to land. The hmit drew into the shore, but Captain Fletcher just before landing warned the men to be careful,' as he had been out on the- bar on the previous day, and bad noticed a very strong set seaward. Wilson. who, by the way, was a native of Scotland, not . Norway as previously reported, and has relatives in Glasgow, remarked that he would take off his gum boots If it were to come to-, swimming. Captain Fletcher warned them not to take such risks as that. A few minutes later the accident happened. Captain Fletcher said the boat completely disappeared, apparently being carried downJby an undercurrent, and was

not seen again until it was cast up on the beach about half a mile to the north of the river entrance. From other accounts, we learn that the men hi'the boat were advised, just as they were leaving the shore to begin their work, to take lifebelts with_ them, but' considered they were not required. CORINNA-PGNDO COLLISION. WELLINGTON, July 26. The Registrar of the Supreme Court was engaged to-day taking the evidence of the captain and officers of the steamer Hondo, whicli was damaged on the 3rd hist, by collision at the Glasgow wharf with the Union Company’s steamer Corinna. A writ has been issued by the New Zealand and African Steam Ship Company against the Union Steam Ship Company, claiming a sum of £467 15s 4d in connection with the alleged collision. The plaintiffs claim that while the Rondo was lying at the Glasgow wharf the Corinna was so negligently handled that she collided with and caused damage to the propeller of the Pondo, as a result of which plaintiffs were put to expens,j in discharging coal and loading the same, and m employing a hulk to enable the propeller of the Rondo to be inspected and repaired.
