SWIMMING.

Our London correspondent writes on 15th June :—Details are to hand this morning of Alias Annette Keileiman’s twenty-two-mile swim in the Danube. It was reported that Miss Kellerman had been seriously injured, but the lady is quite well, and is none the worse for her experience. It appears that the pilot mad© a mistake and directed her into tho shallows, and on to a sandbank, but happily she escaped without injury. I append an account of Miss Keiierman’s swim extracted from the ‘ Wiener Extrablatt ’ : —“Yesterday afternoon at ten minutes past one o’clock Alrss Kellerman undertook to swim the distance from Tulen to Vienna, an event which created much interest in sporting circles. The occasion was rendered all the more interesting as the well-known long-distance Austrian lady swimmer, Madame Isacescu, decided to compete with Aliss Kellerman in the race for a record. A large crowd assembled at Tulen to see the start. Delegates from the Austrian swimming clubs accompanied the swimmers in a boat, which shortly afterwards landed on a sandbank, and was only Liberated after ten minutes’ hard work. Aliss Kellerman, who met with the same misfortune, seemed to enjoy it, and took the lead amidst much cheering. At Greifcnstein Madame Isacoscu was left far behind. Nearing the Reichsbrucke (in Vienna) Miss Kellorman was cheered by the thousands ol spectators, and this again occurred on reaching Handel's Quaf, which was thronged with jceople. Passing barge No. 120 Alias Ke.ll erman was joined by two male members of the Danube Swimming Club, who. amidst the greatest excitement of the onlookers, jumped into the river with the intention of piloting the fearless lady swimmer, between the barges and trawlers, which, to the inexperienced, might prove sudden death. At trawler 60 of the Servian Steam Navigation Company Aliss Kellerman landed amidst the great applause of the onlookers. The captain of the trawler kindly placed his cabin at Aliss KellerniaxTs disposal to make her toilet prior te leaving for the Hotel Continental. Miss Kellerman swam the distance, thirty-seven kilometres, in 5h II min 20sec, thereby beating ail previous records for the Danube. ‘ If. is slated that .Madame Isacescu landed twentv-five minutes .alter Aliss Kellenman’s time had been taken at a place up Ihe stream.” The Danube, of course, runs very fast between the points named in this account, but even so the Australian lady's per--1 ormanoo must be reckoned something very much out of the common.
