DRAINAGE BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin end District Drainage and Sewerage Board waa hold last night, and was attended hy Messrs Burnett (chairman), Scott, Small, Marlow, Hancock, Goro, Christie, and Dr Pulton. ' —Reports. — The reports of the Finance and Works Committee (published in yesterday’s issue) Were adopted without discussion. The following supplementary report was presented by the Works Committee: —A request having been received from the ratepayers in the neighborhood pi Serpentine avenue to continue the branch sewer in that street from Hill street to Alva street, and to reticulate Hill, Maitland, William, and Alva streets and the Market Reserve, the Committee recommended that the work bo proceeded with on receipt of a promised contribution of £l5O. The Committee asked authority to proceed with the reticulation of 22 chains of King Edward street, from Park street to about 2 chains beyond Cargill road, to enable the City Council to complete the formation of this street. The Committee asked authority to advertise for tenders for the reticulation of Kensington as soon as tho plans are prepared and approved of. The rateable value of the area to bo reticulated is £8,025. The Committee recommended that six brick manholes bo put in the main intercepting sewer, and that two manholes be completed in brick, to facilitate the work of cleaning the sewer, at an estimated cost of £l9O 10s. The Committee recommended that the piping at the St. Clair end of the Bay View road ditches be extended as follows: 240 ft in the ditch on the north side, and 350 ft in that on the south side, at a cost of £6O. This will cany these pipes beyond the houses already built, and so do away with might in the summer months develop into a serious nuisance. The report stated that the erection of barricades to New and Driver streets ditches was estimated to cost £6. The Committee recommended that the barricading of Driver street ditch bo done, and that further action be deferred pending a report from the engineer as to covering the New street ditch.—ln moving the adoption of this report Mr Small said that the reticulation of Serpentine avenue would cost about £B6O. It had been asked for, somewhat out of order, by the ratepayers interna, who had offered a contribution of £lso.—The report was adopted, and it was also decided, on the motion of Mr Small, that the Works Committee be authorised to extend a branch sewer up Forth place, in compliance with a request, from Messrs Mason and Wales, to servo a house now in eomse of erection there. —The Railway Station.— The District Health Officer (Dr Ogston) wrote stating that he had been informed that a difference existed between tho Drainage Board and the railway authorities Jwhh tho details of which he explained he had no concern) in reference to connecting th© drams, etc., of the new railway station and tho nearest sewer. After pointing out the necessity for such connection in the interests of public health, Dr Ogston went on to say that, acting on the powers conferred on him by the Drainage Act, he had ® oaj d “to make or cause to be made this connection before the station is open to the public.” Mr Scott, on the letter -having been read by the secretary, remarked: “Declined, with thanks,” Mr Gore: We agree with him in Ins statement, and are quite willing to make the connection if the Government will pav what we ask. After a few conversational remarks expressing similar opinions, Mr Marlow moved that Dr Ogston be informed that the Board had already agreed to the connection being made if the Government paid expenses. He added that the letter made out that the Board objected to the connection being made, which was not the case. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously. —A Question of Control.— Tke Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote asking that the City Engineer be advised of all underground work as it progressed in streets under the control of the Corporation, and stating that certificates would not be issued until six months after the completion of such work.—The letter was received. —The New Loan.— The Board considered in committee details in connection with the issue of the new loan authorised by Parliament, after which there was no farther business.
