A MURDEROUS ASSAULT,

AUCKLAND, July 25. News has been received from Fiji of a murderous assault on Mr Joseph Beit, manager of the Colonial Sugar Company’s Nalovu Estate, aVLautoka, who has under his charge about 200 East India immigrants. While he .was asleep four Indians attacked him with an axe and large cane knives. They butchered him in a horrible manner. He will require to have one leg amputated, but it is hoped that he may recover.

Mr ®an O’Dowd, licensee of the Ba Hotel, returning home unexpectedly Mter a visit to Lautoka, found Dhihp Pfluger, owner of the hotel leased by O’Dowd, in the hotel with Mrs O’Dowd after closing hours. He discharged five revolver shots. Pfluger received one bullet m the arm, and Mrs O’Dowd two bullets in the arms and one in the breast. The wounds were of a serious nature, but not fatal. Pfluger ran to a sugar mill, and Mrs O’Dqwcl took refuge with some friends. O’Dowd is a New Zealander, and brother of a former licensee of the Criterion Hotel. Auckland. Mrs O’Dowd is also a New Zealander, and the mother of two children.
