CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following is a summary of the reports to be presented to the City Council on Wednesday night;— The Works Committee recommend —(1) That the following streets be formed, ballasted, metalled, kerbed, and guttered, and the footways paved at those portions recently widened—viz., King Edward street from Park terrace to a point easterly of Cargill road, about 2 chains, estimated cost £490; Main South road at Benevolent Institution, estimated cost £142; Forbury road from Mr Brebner’s to Cargill road, estimated cost £314; half cost to be borne by the Municipal Department and half cost by the Tramways Department. (2) The carriage-way of Duke street be cut down and remetolled in terms of the city engineer’s report, at a cost not to exceed £66,—The city engineer has been instructed to act in the following matters:—Complaint from the Westport Coal Company of the state of the road leading to their premises in Rattray street; re repairs required to crossing over Crawford street in Jetty street, estimated cost £2 10s; in expending the sum of £4 for screenings for crossing in St. ; Andrew street ov if Great King street, and improving tho channel in front of the Tabernacle in Great King street; as to repairs required to Tilbury’s right-of-way. The registrar of the University of Otago has been advised that the present formation of Union and Leith streets may be regarded as the permanent levels.—The Drainage Board have been requested to take into consideration the question of immediately laying the necessary drains in Edng Edward street. The Water Committee report that the applications from the Department of Agriculture and the Post and Telegraph Department for a water supply to Ward street has been declined, unless those departments are willing to pay the cost of laying the main.—The superintendent of the Gardens and Reserves has been authorised to have the broom stamped out from the Reserve near the Woodhaugh quarry. The Reserves Committee recommend that the agreement entered into between Messrs Henry North and James Neil in regard to the use of a party wall on their leasehold sections, Princes street south, be consented to. —The Otago Football Association have been granted four or five hundred loads of road scrapings to be deposited, if available, on that portion of the Southern Recreation Reserve at present used for playing on, the Association to spread the material. —A letter of thanks has been sent to Mr Wm. Hales. Physic Gardens, Chelsea, London, for his donation of fifty-four packets of seeds to the Botanical Gardens.—Mrs Agnes T. Ward’s tender for twenty-one years’ lease of section 51, and part section 53, Wakarl district, at a rental of £ls Is per annum, has been accepted. The Gas Committee recommend that Mi Thos. Dow be withdrawn from tho gasworks as working foreman, and resume his former duties as gas inspector.—Mr Neil has been appointed working foreman at the Dunedin City Gasworks at 12s per day.—Messrs Burns, Son, and Gray have declined to fulfil their contract for the construction and supply of six mild-steel tilting trucks for the Dunedin City Gasworks, and the tender of Messrs Stenart and Outram to carry out this work at £3l 10s has been accepted. The General Committee report that during the month of Juno, 1,448 cattle, 6,860 sheep, 661 lambs, 319 pigs, and 20? calves were slaughtered at the abattoir, of which seventy-five cattle, eight calves, ten sheep, and one pig were condemned as unfit for food, and the carcasses sent to the manure works. The Tramways Committee recommend that the sum of £lO be paid to Messrs Noyes Brothers, electrical engineers, for supervising alterations to open cars, and that (ho electrical engineer’s recommendation to purchase a dray, to be used foi carting metal, be approved.—The traffif superintendent has been instructed to sell all unclaimed property found in tramcars after being retained for six months, to obtain small hand brushes for each car for use of conductors in clearing their cars of all used tickets, and to reorganise the tramway staff and carry out alterations regarding the work of his department.—The following application* have * been granted (1) Mr Jamas M'Curdy for a stopping place for cars in King Edward street at Melbourne street: (2) St. Kilda Borough Council for extra car to_St. Kilda, if time suggested is found suitable.—The following applications have been declined ;-—(!) Mr Chas. Clark for extra compensation on account of batter of road on his section, Forbury road; (2) Miss L. Kelsey for concession in tram fares for teachers at Free Kindergarten at St. Peter’s Schoolroom, Caversham: (3) Secretary Otago Tramways Industrial Union of Workers, for use of one of the rooms at the carhouse for about one hour twice a month, for collecting the members’ subscriptions.—The free tramway passes granted to the inspectors of machinery have been • withdrawn. The Electric Power and Lighting Committee recommend—(l) That the electrical engineers be instructed to proceed with the work required for permanently lighting the penstock and flume at No. 4 Spidway, and the new caretaker’s house at Waipori; (2) the Taieri County Council be requested to widen the road from Halfway Bush to Muir’s road, a distance of 60 chains, to a width of 66ft, and reerect the fencing, cost £6O; (3) authority be granted to the electrical engineers to obtain a motor generator unit of 60kw. capacity, consisting of 3-phase generator coupled direct to 500 volt D.C, motor, same being required in connection with proposed supply of electrical power to the railway station.—The Town Clerk has been authorised to arrange with the Bank of New Zealand to cable instructions to its London office to pay the sum of lljOOOdol (on presentation of the usual shipping documents) to the R. Thomas and Sons Company, New York City, being contract price for insulators c,i.f. Dunedin or Port Chalmers, required for the Waipori high tension transmission line.—The electrical engineers have Tieen authorised to arrange with Messrs Browne Bros.. Lawrence, for the cartage of material from Lawrence to Waipori" Falls.
