The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, July 14:—A dull sale for all qualities of mutton. Average price lightweight Canterbury brands, ; heavy weights, s|d. North Island mutton u selling at 34d for best quality, and second class quality is quoted at 3|d. The lamb market is steady, and an immediate change in prices is expected. Canterbury brands are quoted st old, and other than Canterbury at 4|d. The beef market is dull, owing to heavy supplies of River Plate. There is no change in price to report. The butter market is firm, and there is an exceptional demand for New Zealand butter. A short supply is on hand. Choice New Zealand brands are selling at 106s, Danish at 112s, and Siberian at 97s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with a good demand. New Zealand offerings are small; 64s is being obtained for white makes, and 66a per cwt for colored. The hemp market is very firm. The market is excited, and there is a speculative demand, owing to reports from Manila indicating a light shipment from that country. Large business is doing, and prices are strong for the stocks on hand. Light g.f.a.q., Wellington, on spot is selling at £35 per ton, and Octobor-December shipments at £34 10s. The price for fair current Manila on spot to-day is £43 10s per ton. 1 here has been no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week. The wool market is steady, and prices are well maintained. For kanri gum the following are current prices: —Ordinary fair to threequarter scraped, £6 15s per cwt; fair half-scraped, 80s per cwt; brown fair half to three-quarter scraped, 85s per cwt • brown pickings, common to good, 47s • pale amber scraped, £7 10s per cwt. The demand is getting better. Scraped is getting scarce, and there is no demand for poorer grades.
