THE CENSUS.

[Special to the Star.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 16. The ‘Lyttelton Times,’ commenting on the city census returns, says:—“ The outstanding feature is the astonishingly slow growth of Dunedin. Our Otago friends, no doubt, will be able to supply an exact explanation, but we confess the returns confirm some fears of our own that Dunedin has almost reached its limit of expansion under existing conditions. The opening up of Central Otago lands and the progress of closer settlement must add to the importance of the chief town of the province, but we expect to find some of the country towns of the South making greater proportional progress of population than that credited to Dunedin. If the public believed that the City could be given a firstclass harbor, or if industrial enterprise should show new signs of energy, the southern centre would not be long in attracting additional population.”
