SPORTING INTELLIGENCE

CANTERBURY NOTES.

[Special to tbcb Stab.]

CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. Although the Canterbury contingent accounted for the principal event, it was not otherwise succe3srul on thj first day of the Wellington meeting. Slow Tom's failure in the Wellington Steeplechase must have cost local backers a good deal of money. It is to be hoped, for Taggart's sake. tha4 the injury to bis horse's stifles will not interfere with his preparation for the Grand National Steeplechase. Mention of Tagg*rt reminds me that he has just reconimiss.oned Lee Enfield, with the intention of trying to pick up a selling race with, him at'the C.J.C. National meeting. • ■ Among the rising twp-yeai-oldfi at Biocarton one of the most promising is Mr Buchanan's filly Two Step. The daughter of Stepniak and Faraway can gallop fast for a few furlongs. Pipi is expected at Riccarton next week to complete his preparation for the National Steeplechase. The North Canterbury Jockey Club havedecided to .hold an " off" meeting without Che totalisator in August. Slow Tom, in charge of Taggart, returned yesterday from his unlucky visit to Willington.

The weather still continues unseasonably mild, with the txception of a brief storm", followed bv a frost early in the present week. We have had nothing at all wintry during the past ten days, and that period is typical of the last two months. It will not be the fault of the weather if the local horses are not forward enough to do theuir selves justice at the National meeting.
