SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
NOTES FROM CANTERBURY. | [Special to the Stab.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 17. After treating us quite kindly for some weeks to occasional exceptionally brilliant days, the weather broke on Wednesday night, and has remained dull and showery s! t-'e. Still, it has not been unfavorable enough to interfere with training operations. Matters at Riccarton, however, are very quiet. The only recent event of interest to the local sporting world has been the polo tournament, wh.ch, however, has attracted but few spectators outaide the limited circle directly interested in the competitions. The handicaps for the autumn meetings , of the Waimate Racing Club and South Canterbury Jockey Club made their appearance this week. It will be time enough to make selections after the closing of the acceptances, but in the meanwhile one cannot help remarking that the lkts reveal an extraordinary growing popularity on the part of both clul*. The Waimate Club, who a few years ago were in a very small way indeed, now add £IOO to their principal event, to which they have received seventeen entries, and for another race they have secured twenty nominations. Thirteen horses are engaged in the Timaru Cup, and no less than twenty-four in one of the minor events, at the South Canterbury meeting. J Franks has leased the three-year-old filly by Finland from Papilla from L. H. Hewitt. He has had a further addition to his team in the shape of a two-year-old colt (just broken) by Currassow from Miss Lucy, the dam ol Barmby. Ability, who is a half-brother to Slow Tom, has joined the jumping brigade. He gave a creditable display during a schooling gallop the other morning. F. Holmes took advantage of Narrangerie's recent successes at the Akaroa meeting to sell the horse to Mr Trilford, a son of the Canterbury racing man. What is more, he got lOOgs, at which price the son of Bogon was certainly well sold. By the way,. the reported of Cyaievua to Holmes is contradicted. All the same, I should not be surprised to find ber racing in lis colors shortly. P.ne has sent Turmoil back to Mr Buchanan. The filly is not destined to have a very successful career on tho turf, whatever she may do at the stud. FORBURY~PARK RACING CLUB.
