ATHLETICS.

[By Spteb.] —Fixtures.— 13th January ... D.A.A.C Evening Meeting. 11th February _ D.A-A.O. Annual Sports. Thanks to the enterprise of the Waikouaiti Society and the Oamarn Caledonian Society local athletes have been enabled to take part in amateur events during the holidays.

On Boxing Day the attraction was at "Waikouaiti, the racing resulting as follows : —220 Yards Flat Handicap : Christie 1, Titchener 2. Half-mile Plat: Titchener 1, Christie 2. The corn-petition was very keen, and the finishes close and exciting. The racing at the Oamarn Caledonian Society's gathering on the 2nd and 3rd of January was of a very high order. The events resulted as follows: 2: 200 Yards Flat—E. B. Fraser (Oamaru), 4yds, 1; J. W. Price (Dunedin), 14yds, 2; T. J. CKane (Dunedin),'3yds, 3. Time, (Dunedin), 16yds, 1; J. T. Mooney (Dunedin), l?yds, 2; W. H. Patrick (Dunedin), 14yds, 3. Time, 545 sec. January 3: 200 Yards Flat J. F. Mooney (Dunedin), 9yds, 1; W. J. O'Kanc (Dunedin), scratch, 2; T. Harrison (Dunedin), ,14yds, 3. Time,, 22seo. 440 Yards Flat—T. Harrison (Dunedin), 25yds, 1; J. Curran (Oamarn), 16yda. 2; Q. B.' Fraser (Oamaru), scratch, 3. lime, 55§sec. The weather throughout both days wau decidedly unpleasant, the dust raised bv the high wind adding greatly to the discomfort of competitors and spectators alike, whilst at times the wind coming off the ranges was bitterly cold- The management of the meeting was all that could be desired, each event being got off up to time, the long programme of each day being concluded sharp to time. I understand that tlie management are so well pleased with the amateur races that it is highly probable an additional race of half a mile each day will be placed upon next year's programme. Dunedhrites were largely responsible for the success of the amateur races at Oamaru and I think the Caledonian Society of Ofego would be well advised if they placed amateur events upon their New Year's programme. Reverting to the Osmara meeting,

the form shown may be summarised as fpl-"' lows:—E. B. Fraser (Oamaru) was successful in winning the 200 Yards Flat (first day) off 4yds, and he also ran second from , scratch in the 440 .(second day), v He i showed fine form, and ran with excellent judgment. His display was in marked contrast to that shown at the North Otago Club's meeting. J. T. Mooney secured first place off 9yds in the 200 (second day), and ran second off lfyds in the 440 (first day). His return to form is very pfeasme, as he has been under a cloud for a long time. He ran with excellent judgment, and his success was very popular. A. 8.Christie (16yds) had a cake walk in the 440 Yards Flat (first day). He is in a winning vein just now, and on present form he is_hard to beat Although perhaps the handicapper to( rather bard upon him in. bringing him back from lords to 2yds in the 440 Yards (second day), Christie ran right up to his highest standard, and made a big bid for victory. W. J. CKane ran third (off 3yds) in the 200 Yards, first day, and second from scratch in the 200 Yard's, second day. His return to form is gratifying, in view of the New Zealand championship meeting, Harrison, the' Varsity runner, secured winning honors from off the 25yds in the 440 (second day), and also third off 14yds in the 200 (second day). He ran well, and in the 440 made every post a winning one. The handicapper rather under-rated his abilities. Patrick, off 14yds, secured third place in the 440 (first day). He struck me as being a likely rurmer, and should shortly secure winning honors. Hamann ran up to form, but was unable to obtain a place. He tired visibly on the second day. Probably a short spell would do him good. M*C!orkrndßle showed fair form, but the handicapper rather over-estimated his present abilities. With the holidays at an end athletes are turning their attention to local events. ••>■•

The D.A.A.OL resume their interesting evening meetings next Friday, 13th inst, when the following > events Trill be contested:—3so Yawls Flat Handicap, Twomile Flab Handicap, High Jump. All the men are in the best of condition, and the racing on Friday should be -well worth witnessing. The Sports Committee of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club are getting matters in connection with their annual sports meeting, to be held on the Caledonian Grounds on Saturday, 11th ■ February, well under way. The programme of events has been | drawn up, and comprises the following f— j 120 Yards? Maiden Flat (scratch), 100 Yards Flat Handicap, 220 Yards Flat, 440 Yards i Flat Handicap (lady's bracelet), Half-mile Flat Handicap, One Mile Flat Handicap, Two Mile Flat Handicap, Half-mile Walk Handicap, One Mile Walk Handicap, Teams' Eelay Race (one mile), Schools' Race (220 yds), D.A.B.C. Flat Handicap (220 yds), High Jump Handicap, Long Jump Handicap, 120 Yards Hurdles Handicap. 1 Putting the 161b Shot Handicap, Throwing the 16lb Hammer, 230 Yards Flat Championship of Otago, One-mile Bicycle Handicap (cash), Two-mile Bicycle Handicap (cash). The programme includes events for all classes of atlilet-es, and large entries may be confidently looked for. Great interest will attach to the 220 Yards Championship of Otago, and a contest between the cracks of Otago should be a memorable one. The Civil Service Club hold their 440 Yards Race (Lady's Bracelet) at the D.A.A.C. evening meeting on February 3. By cable we are advised that Shrubb and Duffy have left England for the colonies. The Otago Centre are making preparations for the visit to Dunedin, and indications point to the visit being a conspicuous success.
