YACHTING.

[By Rttddeb.]

The Bavensbourne Sailing Club heldthoir second series of races on Saturday, when light south-east weather prevailed. The First Class brought out a good field, Waimana, Eileen, Irex, Ventura,, and Lennox Lass competing. Irex, with her big spread of canvas, easily accounted for all opposition, coining home six minutes ahead of Wainiana, her nearest opponent, while the others were hopelessly beaten. Irex has proved herself an exceptionally fast boat in light weather, having crossed the line first on the three occasions she has competed, but it vet remains to be seen what she can do in a breeze.

Eileen gave one of her worst performances so far, being easily beaten by Waimana, Irex, and Ventura, and having a big " go" for last place with Lennox La-ra. The day was not a suitable one for Eileen, a breeze being more in her line, but even under tie conditions prevailing she should have been closer up at the finish.

The Port Chalmers Sailing Club continue to sail the club races weekly, and although the number of competitors in each class Is generally limited to three, the members seem to get good sport out of their racing. In the First Class, Runa, Bronzewing, and Maytowns competed, Runa winning easilv. Runa and Bronzewing are two well-known competitors, but Maytowns is practically a new performer, tlie Otago Regatta on Boxing Day being her first appearance, she wanning easily. She is a boat of the Sydney stamp, designed to carry a crew of abont twenty sitters to keep her upright, and has already won renown by emptying her crew out on more than one occasion. This class of boat may be all right in Sydney Harbor, where the wind is generally steady, but it is certainly not the type of boat suitable for tliis harbor, where we frequently get| the wi*>d very puffy off the hills.

The protects lodged by Wings againstLeader ret Port Chalmers were considered by tbe Otago Regatta Committee last -week, and after a lengthy meeting lasting nearly three hoars both appeals were decided against "Wings. Tlye first protest—that of fouling the buoy off Grassy Point—did not require much consideration on the evidence given, imd was soon disposed of. The second one—that of fouling the rounding boat Madges—was folly gone into, and caused a discussion of considerable length. The Committee, after half an hem's deliberation, decided to uphold the decision of the' judges. The Otago Yacht Club baive drawn up their syllabus for the remainder of the season as follows: —Championship, Saturday, January 21; Ladies' Day and Moller Cup, Saturday, February 18, when a short programme of events will take place, and the members, hon. members, and lady friends will receive invitations for the afternoon. The third series of club races will be held at jß«vensbowrae in conjunction with the Ravensboorae regatta on Saturday., February 4.
