BOWLING

TOURNAMENT ARRANGEMENTS. An adjourned meeting! of the Executive of the New Zealand Bowling Association was held yesterday afternoon, Mr C. J. Payne in the chair. Mr J. 0. Maddison, of Christchurch (presjdeat of the Association), was also present.

Acting on a letter fromi the secretary of the Northern Association, it was resolved to endeayor to arrange a North v. South Island match at the approaching tournament, if opportunity' offers. It was decided that "lady's day" at the tournament be Friday, at the Christchnrch Green.

It waa resolved to acknowledge a letter from the local secretary in respect to the Easter tournament at Inveroargill, and to inform him that the Executive desired a proof copy of tho programme for approval. It was pointed out that in the conditions for tie tournament, supposing there were three sections, when the winners wen? playing off, one of them would have a bye, to be decided by ballot, and it was suggested that the Executive should alter this so as to make each of the three play the other two ; The Chairman said that the Association, at their meeting, had confirmed the conditions of tho game as set out in tho programme, and the Executive had no power to do anything. _ A discussion arose over the question oi winners playing winners, about which several letters had been written to tho secretary. Tho Chairman and Secretary both endeavored to make tie matter clear, and the gist- of tbeir explanation, so far as we can make it out, is this: The idea of the Executive is to make certain thai the rinks which are leading should meet, each other, and to make it practically impossible for a comparatively weak rink v> go through and have the greatest number of wins in its section and yet never meet the strongest rink in it. As a section consists of sixteen rinks, each rink would have to play fifteen games to meet, each other rink. But it only plays six games, and 60 must necessarily fail to meet nine rinks in tho section. Through lucky balloting a weak rink might thus avoid meeting the stronger ones, and so get through. But. if equal winners play equal winners, and losero play losers, then tho danger is obviated.
