A TOO ZEALOUS INSPECTOR
Thomas Archer, a well-known Yarmouth fish merchant, was summoned under the Factory Act for illegally employing his eleven-year-old nephew in making herring boxes. The defence was that tho boy was simply amusing himself, and the magistrate asked the factory inspector if ho was really serious in pressing the case.
"Yes," replied the inspector, "we do press it. We must be guided by the section of the Act."
" I never heard a more paltry case in ?/ l l [e C said the magistrate. *" We fine Mr Archer a farthing, including costs." "I would rather withdraw tho case, if you don't mind," said the inspector. "No, no," replied'the magistrate, "I pressed you to withdraw, but you would not.
