THE ANGLICAN CHURCH AND THE DRINK TRAFFIC.
TO Tff" ">-!."--"». Sir, —I desire to , > slander againet tiu '.«PPraSrch contained m "Watcher's" letter in Saturday's !fr? e °f 1 7 our l»aper, wherein he states: Jispecially as tlis Anglican Church in this country has done its utmost to bolster up the traffic—i.e., tie liquor traffic—into a sham _ ruspscUbility." Surely because the majority of the bishops, clergy, and laity thank that State control or the Gothenburg system i& a beter remedy than Prohibition for the admitted evils of the present system, the Church is not to be slandered and held up to scorn.
I am well aware that sneers against the Anghcan Church are, to say the least, not unpopular with a very section of our community; but would it riot be kinder on the part of dissenters, such as "Watcher" to be lenient to the New Zealand branch of the great mother Chnrcli, instead of always misrepresenting her and holding her up to ridicule.—l am, etc., .... - D- Harris Hastings.
