(Received April 11, at 8.53 a.m.) Reuters Agency at St. Petersburg reports that though General Kouropatkin’s first line of defence is near Fengwhangcheug, the Russians will hold Antung or Shabotze, commanding the Pekin road, as long as possible. The Yalu is I,oooyds wide at Tongampbo. Russian sharpshooters occupy the river islands. Admiral Urfu has not replied to the protests of the commanders of the Vajyag and Korietz, as the Russians fought outside Chemulpo Harbor. JAPAN EMPLOYS CANADIAN NURSES AN EMPRESS’S CARE. LONDON, April 9. Japan has engaged 200 Canadians to serve with the medical and bearer corps. They served similarly in the South African War. The ‘ Standard ’ states that the Empress of Japan presented the Russians who were wounded in the Chemulpo fight with artificial eyes and limbs. THE PORT ARTHUR ATTACKS. JAPANESE LOSSES. LONDON,' April 9. An official report published at Tokio states that in the various attacks on Port Arthur the Japanese lost fourteen killed, while nine died of their wounds. Of the ninety-one others wounded forty have al. ready recovered. A BARBED WIRE MOAT. LONDON, April 9. The ‘ Daily Chronicle's ’ Tokio correspondent reports that a mout four miles long, covered and protected with barbed wire, has been constructed two miles north of Port Arthur.
