, Tl ?f" 3 „ was a crowded house at the Alhambra Theatre last evening, and the entertainment provided went with a swing from the first item to the last. Many new artists are announced to appear on Saturday xught next. Meanwhile, the present programme will bo repeated every evening? Mr Peter Barrs report prepared for the information of the Greater Dunedin Committee is now completed. It deals solely with the accountancy side of the question. The report is in the hands of the Committee, and will probably come up for discussion at to-inorrow's meeting. About 3,200 passengers by railway booked at the Dunedin "station yesterday, the largest sub-totals being 62*5 to the Taieri races, 26D to Seacliff, 240 to Port Chalmers, and 200 to Middlemareh. The tratfic throughout the district was carried on with smoothness and despatch. We understand that a man, who is visiting many houses in Dunedin and suburbs as a hawker, is claiming sympathy on the ground that he was the driver on a tramcar at the time of a fatal accident, as a consequence of which his services were dispensed with. There is absolutely no truth in the man's statement. The party he purports to represent was not discharged by the company.

In his lecture last night Mr Clement Wragge did his best to dispel tho wizard notion that surrounds the thought of "weather prophet" in the minds of some people. He showed that the forecast of the expert in climatology and weather conditions generally was just the result of careful observations and the use of, star.da.rd instruments treated scientifically. Ho explained how. a knowledge of local climatic peculiarities helped in matters of agriculture, etock rearing, hygiene, etc., and said that the more science" or exact knowledge brought to bear on anv walk of life tile greater would bo the meagre of success. In defence of the establishment of so many observing stations in different parts of Australia, he said that the more of them there were the greater the percentage of correctness in weather forecasts would be. At the Brisbane Weather Bureau tbey had arrived at a percentage of 35.

We were tB7? morning shown the model of a life-saving device suitable for attachment to electric cars running 'at high speeds in crowded thoroughfares. The invention, which is that of Mr John Meek, of Elm row, ;md for winch that gentleman iutends applying for patent rights, consists of a, concave wire apron, which, running in front of the car, and quite close to tie rails, catches up any object which may be on the line and carries it along until the car can be' stopped. A pneumatic rim on the outer edge of the apron minimises the chance of injury arising from first impact. The model, "na worked by Mr Meek in the presence of one of our representatives this morning, did everything that the inventor claimed for it.

Or Hunter having intimated that he could not be a candidate for the mayoralty this year, the Roslyn Council have unanimously requested the present mayor (Mr Thomas Mackenzie, M.H.R.) to be "again nominated, as the Council consider that it would be detrimental to the interests of the borough to lose his services at a critical period, when many important matters, such as gas and water supply and the Greater Dunedin question, will have to be considered. To this request Mr Mackenzie has promised a reply to-morrow. Our Oamaru correspondent writes: Color-sergeant M'Kenzie, of the Queen's Eiflea, who is spoken of as a possible member of the New Zealand team to attend the rifle meeting at Bisley, put up a record yesterday afternoon that ought to make him tolerably certain. Shooting for his company in a match against the" Duntroon Rifles, he put on the possible at 200 yds with ten shots, and followed it up with ten bull's-eyes at sCoyds. Bisley targets were used, and the range is an open one. A double possible with ten shots is, I believe, a record for the colony, and the feat is the more noteworthy from the fact that a puzzling wind was experienced at the longer range.

A meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery was held this afternoon. The Rev. Mr Mackie presided in the absence of the Moderator. The business was consideration of the red >■- nation, owing to ill-health, of the Rev. A. Greig, of North-east Harbor, where he has been minister for thirty-six vears. After discussion it was resolved, on the motion of the Rev. D. Borne, that Mr Greig's resignation be accepted with regret, and that the General Assembly be recommended to place- Mr Greig on the aged and infirm ministers' fund, and to give him the position of minister emeritus, with a seat in the church courts. Also that the resin-nation take effect on May 2 nest, and that°i committee draw up a minute cxpressi,;- aunrccmfcion of the services rendered by Mr Grei* to the Church. 3
