While an artizan was crossing a street at Hanley, Staffordshire, a forgotten colliery shaft 200 ft deep suddenly opc-ned and swallowed him. The planks covering tile shaft were rotten, and had been covered with earih. Any attempt at rescue was impossible. A second man just escaped.
