In port noon to-day :—At Dunedia : Invercargill (steam). Montgomeryshire, Lark, Edward, Isabella Anderson (sail). At Port Chalmers : —Rangatira. Upolu, Moura, Westralia (steam), Canterbury (sail). Captain Thommessen "brings the Montgomeryshire into port in beautiful condition. Advantage has been taken of her stay in Wellington to wipe off some of the travel stains, consequent on a long oversea voyage. Paint bus been laid on too, and the familiar condition of some of the Home traders—rusted from water-line to gunwale—is conspicuous by its absence. Aloft a nice combination of black and white shows her spars to advantage, and her decks, fittings, and brasswork are a model of cleanliness. The Montgomeryshire commenced putting out cargo yesterday. She has something like 1,100 torts for this port. The Invercargill, from Timaru, came in early this morning, and tied up at the Rattray street wharf. After working cargo, she sailed again about noon for Irrvere«rgifl. She proceeds from that port to Colae, where she is to load for Timara, returning to Dnnedin about Tuesday next. The Westralia is to come up from Port Chalmers to Dunedin about 4 a.m. to-mor-xow, and is scheduled to sail for Sydney via Auckland about 2 p.m. the same day. The Tarawera 13 due here from Auckland en Saturday, and is to take up the Tahrne's Tunning on the following day. The Tavinni is to come on to Port Chalmers from Auckland for overhaul, and is expected here about the 19th insL The Monowai was a day late in reaching the- Bluff, and did not arrive here this morning, as was anticipated. She is expected to arrive at Port Chalmers to-mor-row morning, and is to sail the same after£oon for Sydney via Cook Strait. It is uncertain whether she will come up to Dunedin or not.

The Rakanoa, from Auckland, with the hulk La Plata in tow, is now expected to arrive off the Heads to-morrow afternoon. After tending the hulk into harbor she goes on to the Bluff, and proceeds from that port to Westport. Captain M'Alister, of the Toroa, which arrived at Lyttelton from the Chatham Islands on Saturday evening, reports that when at the islands he was informed that Mr Bnckeridge's yacht Kia Ora passed Mataraka, on the north of the main island, a* 6 p.m. on December 2. The little craft •was then heading east-south-east, and a north-westerly breeze was blowing. All hope of saving the barque Gifford at San Francisco has now been abandoned, and it is donbted if there will be enough of the vessel left to offer at an anction sale. A San Francisco exchange says:—"The chief pity of the loss of the Gifford lies in the fact that proper action taken immediately after she had stranded would undoubtedly have resulted in saving the vessel. Nobody was authorised to take that action, however, and during the precious hours intervening between the disaster and the arrival of cabled authority from England the sea and sand conspired successfully to seal the Gilford's fate."

Liverpool underwriters report that hope of seven missing vessels turning up has practically been abandoned One hundred and sixty lives are involved The vessels are the British ships Corolla, Loch Long, Aristides, and Milton Park, the steamer Einsbury, the American ship Helen Brewer, and the German barqrae August Wreckage belonging to the Loch Long, from Glasgow for New Caledonia, has been picked up, but the fate of tie otter vessels is a Biystery. Twenty of the men belonged to Adverpooi.

THE BEN AVON" WBECK.

RESULT OF THE SALVAGE WORK.

Mr Staveley, of the firm of Staveley Bros., contractors, of Carterton, who are salving the wreck of the barque Ben Avon at Palliser Bay, arrived in Wellington on Friday last. Mr Staveley states that the hull of the wreck is still visible under water from shore when the tide is out. The wreck is submerged with the exceptiou of a forward deckhouse, which projects several feet out of water. A bow anchor is high and dry on the reef. Salvage work has been in progress for nearly a fortnight, but as the weather has been fine in the vicinity for the last five days, nothing has come ashore since Monday. There are 178 casks of whisky m good condition on the beach, 38 cases of whisky (also intact), 1 ea*o of chloroform, 9 rolls of linoleum (slightly stained), 1 cask of ship's vinegar, 1 cask o*f ship s molasses (both undamaged). The original cargo of whisky comprised 265 casks. Among debris washed ashore are hundreds of corks from whisky bottles, piles of shattered wiusky case.?, boxes of Epsom salts, confectionery, a few torn sails, a yardarm, sbips decking and woodwork, a few wire ropes from the riggi D g, blocks and tackle. A quantity of torn linoleum is lying on the beach, and the work of collecting the salvage has been very arduous. Half a dozen men, with nine horses, have been employed almost night and day for over a week. "As no more drays were "obtainable, the rescued cargo has been necessarily sledged along the beach for a distance of seven miles to a point in Kawa Kawa Bay. The salvage is collected together there 'in readiness for shipping to Wellington, there being an easv landing-place close by for surf boats. Tile wreck has been visited in the lifeboat in which the crew landed. The hull is broken in two in the centre. The masts ajp not broken oil. but have disappeared from view owing to the hull rolling over on its beam end. 'The fomard part of the hull has fallen over on its pert side, whilst the after part lias rolled over in the opposite direction. The spars project out of the water. Messrs Staveley 15ros. will probably dynamite the wreck in order to salve more of the cargo. A small coastal steamer is to be chartered immediately to bring the cargo to Wellington.
