CAUGHT IN THE ACT.

PALMERSTON N., December 14. On Saturday night a man named Edward J. J. Mangan was caught red-handed in a theft at the Commercial Hotel. He had jewellery valued at £l6 belonging to the proprietor in his possession. In a plant of accused s the police subsequently found jewedeiy, clothing, etc., taken at different periods from the Central, Occidental, Clarendon Hotels, Palmerston, and Wareham’s Hotel, Feeding, the whole aggregating £SO. Portion of the find includes jewellery taken from Gisborne delegates to the recent triennial conference of Foresters, held here. At the S.M. Court this morning the accused was remanded, bail being granted in hiq own. recognisance for £IOO and two sureties of £SO. Mangan is well known to the police in Auckland and Wellington.
