In a claim under the Compensation for Accidents Act brought at Wellington, by a ganger named Modoy, whose leg was broken whilst he was working in a quarry uu the farm'of respondent (Modscoi), the Arbitration Court held respondeat liable, and decided that claimant was entitled to 2s 6d per week. In another case, Tsid v. Stevens, in which a claim was made for £75 compensation, the application was dismissed, as the claini for compensation had not been made in proper 1 form. Messrs Laurenson, M.H.R., and Finnic G. Brown, secretary of the New Zealand Fisheries Company, who visited the Chathams to ascertain their suitability as a. fishing ground, returned to Lyttelton by the Toroa on Saturday night. T;h;y express satisfaction with the results, having found a great abundance of trumpeter, cod. and other fish of admirable quality. A native named Henry Pafaio, living at Kaiapoi pah, cut Jbds throat on Saturday afternoon. He is stOl alive, but is not expected to recover.
