SOLUTION OF PROBLEM No. 682. Key move: Q-K 2.
GAME No. 525. (From the Vienna Tourney.) —Marco's Memory.— AUgaier Gambit.
Nous from the ' Mercury,' Leeds, England Wo have discovered that the ahove panie nas the following entertaining incident attached to it:—Herr Marco played his game from memory, move by move, np to the twentieth. Hexr Schlechter, quite unconsciously, replied according to the published game, but mado a different twentieth move. This game had been played nearly thirty years previously in Russia, and was published in the ' Kleines Lehrbuch.' Marco's memory being excedingly good, he simplv trusted to the result of the published game" and plaved confidently 20 KWB 5, expecting his opponent to reply 20...Q x B P, as in the published partie, when White wins by 21 R-K B sq. Schlechter, .not knowing this, played according to his usual judgment, and surprised Marco by making a deviation at this point; and, as seen in tlio above game, he inflicted defeat on the good-memory player. Now, as 20 Kt-B 5 loses, it. should bo interesting to the student to try to find a stronger move. Suppose 20 B-K B 4; then, as suggested bv Mr Holier, 20...Kt-B 3; 21 Q-K 4. Q-Kt 5: 22 P-B 3, B-Q2; 23 B i Kt, R-K sq and wins. But suppose 22 R-K B sq, instead of 22 P-B 3, White apparently wins in every variation. Hence, Marco lost by having too good a memory: his iwenticth move should have been B-K B 4! GAME No. 526. The following game secured the brilliancy prize in the recent match played by correspondence between England and Ireland. The score and notes aro from the • Western Daily Mercury':
<a) Tuo (Jiedhill attack is analvsed in tho 'B.C.M.,' 1902, p. 54; and 1903, p. 9. (V>) P-Q B 4 is the best reply, followed by Kt-Q B 3, if White continues Kt-B 5 t'Gkdhill). (c) B-Kt 2 seems best, followed by casUiii"and P-K B 3. D (d) If 9 P x B; lOQiP ch. K-K 2: 11 B-Kt 5! (e) Threatening mate in three; 12 P-B3 Q-R 4: 13 Q x P ch, B-K 2; H Q mates. (f) If 13 R-Kt sq; WBjPcIKsE; 15 Q-R 7 cli, R-Kt 2; 16 Q-R 5 eh, K-KL sq; 17 B-R 6, followed by Kt-Kt 5, with a winnine: attack. (g) Of course, if 17 castles, Black would win a pawn, and get somewhat of an attack. (hj) Here the " woodshiftor" of J. H. Blackburne would play 16 B x Kt; but White threatens tho following mate in seven, unless Black at once retreats tho Q-B 2; thus if 16 B-Kt 5; 17 Q x P ch, K-Q sq; 18 Kt x P ch, B x Kt; 19 B-Kt 5 ch, K-B sq (B interposing saves a move, but makes no difference to the forced mate); 20 Q-K 8 ch, K-B 2: 21 B-Q 8 ch, K-B sq; 22 B x Q (or to Kt 6) mate. (0 If 23 P k B, Q-R 7. (j) Tf 32 V x P, Q-R 6 might be awkward for White (Welsh). Regarding the third note, it may be pointed out that if 6 B-Kt 2; 7 B-K Kt 5. P-K B 3: 8 Q x P ch, K-B sq!; 9 P x P. Kt x P; 10 B x Kt, B x B!; 11 Qx P, and White should win. NOTES. Entries for the New Zealand Chess Congress closed yesterday. Mr C. W. Tanner has been appointed secretary to the Championship Coireress. Messrs O. Balk and J. Crow, of tho Otago Chess Club, have definitely intimated that they will not be competitors for the ISTew Zealand chess championship this year. The only certain representative' from" the Otago Club as yet ia Mr D. Forsyth. Mr Lyders, the remaining nominee of the clnb, is still undecided, but we venture the opinion that the roll call will find him among the fighters. It is reported that Giza Maroczy has" abandoned chess, and accepted a professorship of higher mathematics at Buda-Pesth.
