CRICKET: OTAGO v. CANTERBURY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—l notice that the Selection Committee have, not picked GeJdes to practise for the above match. I hope this is not because lie is unable to play, and yet I do not know of any other reason why he should not be selected. I. along with others, would be glad to know the reason of bis non-inclusion. As to the matter of ..umpires,, I hoce, our Association, :u select,,
ing the umpire on behalf of.Otago, will make their choice from one of those who act Saturday after Saturday in our c'ub fixtures. In past years it*Has'been the custom to appoint a player who, capable as he may be for the position, ought not to displace fch#e who act in local first class cricket, and are quite as well qualified to fall the position. They ought, at least, have the first refusal of the post before it is offered to any player. The same remarks apply to scorers in our rep. matches. Cricketers themselves should see justice done to these mu:h-abused persons.—l am, »tc, Fair Plat. December 22.
