Preso Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,
MELBOURNE, April 17. (Received April 17, at 9.24 a.m.)
The Pacific Cable Company’s new steamer Iris, intended for cable work in the Pacific, has arrived. She had a severe handling when crossing the Southern Ocean, during the cyclone which the Oruba also experienced. but came through with slight damage. The captain tried filling the forward houses with oil-soaked oakum, which percolated over the sides, and helped to calm the seas. She brings 400 miles of deepsea cables.
