.Maori Hill. —At the monthlv meeting of the Borough Council last evening there were present the Mayor (Mr G. Butler) and Cra N. A. Booth, Pilkington, Smith, Crowther, J. B. Booth, Grant, Aaskoy, and Davidson. —The Finance Committee reported that the debit balance in the general account was | £312 ss, and in the loan account £159 3s ; Id. Adopted.—The report from the inspector ! of works upon work done during the month j was adopted.—Correspondence was dealt ; with. Mr P. R. Sargood wrote stating his objections to the cutting of the lower 1 branches of “ a magnificent Wellingtonia,” 1 as required by the Council. It was decided that the Council adhere to their decision, and that if the lower branches are not removed within a fortnight the Council will do the work.—The Secretary of the Drainage Board wrote in reply to the Council’s letter re works in Newington road and High street—that if the Board were not prepared to undertake such works the Council would be reluctantly compelled to take advantage of the Drainage Act and Amendment Act, the borough receiving no actual benefit from the operations of the board—that the Board would adhere to their former decision. Received.— A number of ratepayers in and adjoining the towmship of Glenleith petitioned the Council to widen and form “ the muddy road ” connecting the Wakari and District roads. Referred to the incoming Works Committee for favorable consideration.—Or Crowther moved, and Cr Smith seconded—“ That the City Council of Dunedin be written to asking their consent to permit the Council to asphalt the present footpath fronting Cannington, facing the Town Belt; also to metal a portion in front of same; ami that the work be proceeded with immediately the City Council’s consent is obtained.” Cartied.—At a special meeting of the Council a shilling rate was struck for West Ward, and Is fid for the rest of the borough for the current year. A drainage rate of 2d in the £ was also struck on the rateable value of property in portion of the borough only. The clerk informed the Council prior to the drainage rate being struck that in making the rate for a portion of the area only they were not fulfilling the demand of the Drainage Board, which declared that the rate should be on the whole of the borough, cxelusive of the Kaikorai watershed, and that the request of the Council that certain other portions of the borough be exempt had merely been received by the Board.
