The British Government have purchased thirty-six square miles of land near Mkldlebury for a military training ground, and are erecting cantonments for 5,000 troops. General Sir Evelyn Wood has been appointed a field-marshal, as well as General White, the defender of Ladysmith.
April 10. The Rev. Mr Evans, whose conduct was recently called in question by Dr Ingram, Bishop of London, .and resulted in his suspension as vicar of St. Michael’s, Shoreditch, has become a convert to the Roman Catholic Church, with many of his congregation.

NEW YORK, April 10. An explosion took place in connection with the battleship lowa’s 12in gun during target practice at Pensacola. It killed three and injured several persons.
CABUL, April 9. Some Afghans arrested Lieutenant-colonel A- C. Yate, of the Indian Staff Corps, for wandering near a fort at Spinbaldak. It is believed that Colonel Yate accidentally crossed the frontier.
ST. PETERSBURG, April 9. The Czarina is seriously ill with peritonitis.
