NAPIER, June 18. The 'Daily Telegraph' states that a movement baa been on foot among the Maoris throng hout New Zealand to present the Hon. J. Carroll with a parse of sovereigns in recognition of his long and valuable services to the native race. Mr Carroll, however, has written to the promoters, expressing his high appreciation of t. e r kind and generous intent, but declining to accept the proposed gift, on the gronnd that he had only done his duty as "father of the tribe."
