VOLUNTEERING.
* BUGLE COMPETITION. The first competition for the above trophy for the year 1902 was tired at the Pelichet Bay range on Saturday afternoon, seven teams taking part. The conditions were: M 0 and but) yards, seven shots (the original intention of ten shots having lo he. altered owing (o the dull weather and the probability of the last men having to complete their shooting in the dark). At, 500 yards Sergeant Poole iDunediu Uinet) made the possible, while five orhers registered J-l points each. At the first distance the Ci'v Guards had a load of !) points from the Engineers, while, at 600 yards ih'j advantage was further increased. At this raiicc the highest, individual scores were made b'C.P.O. Woollr.tt (0.N.A.) and Private Sonntag (City (iuarribj. each 34, these, two also being top scorers at the two distances with 68 points. Lieutenant-colonel Smith ua-: the range officer during the afternoon. The final competition will be fired on April 19. The following arc Saturday's scores: 500 600
CAVERSHAM RIFLES. The Caveraham RiHes fired at their range on Saturday for prizes presented by ?>Fr John Tavcrner and the company. The weather was against good shooting, being wet nnd misty. Conditions: Seven shots at 300, 500, and 600 yards. The wiuners wore Privates Porteous and Doran, Sergeant Scarle winning two range prizes for iho first class shots and Private W. Russell two for the second class. The following wee the highest scores, also counting for Hallenstein's trophy:
1 Range prizes. * Second class range prizes. At Puerua on Easter Monday a friendly match was fired between ten local civilians and a team from the Clutha Mounted Rifles, the conditions being seven shots at 300 and 500 yards. An interesting competition resulted in favor of the visitors, the snores being: Clutha Rifles 502, Puerua Civilians 490. There is every probability of a strong rifle club being formed at Puerua.
