RUN OVER IN HIGH STREET

Jessie Dowden, wife of Mr Arthur Dawden, boilernu-iker, employed at Hillside, and living in the Main road. North-east Valley, went to Dr Blomiield's consulting rooms in High street this morning, taking with her one of the children, about four years of age. Mrs Dowden had left the surgery, .and was walking down Hiidi street on the southern footpath, when, just as she reached the intersection of Hope street, a bottle-gatherer's horse and cart, tearing down at a bolting pace, overtook her, and the runaway horse, swerving, knocked her down and seemed to go over her. The cart struck the kerbstone and turned over, coming to grief at the corner. Mrs Dowden fortunately escaped being killed, but when picked up and carried into Mrs Geo. Wall's house at the corner it was seen that the injuries were of a serious character. Dr Blomfield was at once called, and he attended to the sufferer, ordering her removal to the hospital, and accompanying her thither in the ambulance, which was telephoned for by Mr J. 1. Arnold, M-BLR-, who happened to be passing at the time, and also rang up the relatives. The accident happened at about eleven o'clock. The horse and cart that did the mischief belong, wo understand, to Mr A. Erickson, nf South Dunedm. Bystanders say that the horse and cart were standing in Graham street, the chain on the wheel, when something occurred to startle the horse. Mr Dowden is in the wav of misfortune lately. It was only recently that he had one of his eyes hurt whilst working at his trade. The chief injury sustained by Mrs Dowden is a serious fracture of the base of the skull. At the hospital a further examination of the mother and child was made. So far as the doctors can observe at present, the base of Mrs Dowden's skull is fractured. She is unconscious, and the medical men have grave doubts as to the patient's recovery, her condition being critical. However, it is possible that she may survive. The child, whose name is Elizabeth, was a Bevere sufferer as well as her mother. Doth her jaws were fractured badly, but no trouble is anticipated in effecting a recovery in her case.
