CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following is a summary of the reports prepared for to-morrow's meeting of the City Council:— The General Committee recommend thai; the Logan Point Baths buildings and material be sold by public tender, and tbafc the caretaker of the same receive one month's notice of the termination of his engagement. During the month of December, 1901, 781 cattle, 5,394 sheep, 3,265 lambs, 381 pigs, and 120 calves were slaughtered at the abattoir, of which 8 cattle, 3 sheep, 2 pigs, and 1 calf were condemned as unfit for food. The Committee recommend that the Council pass a by-law to preytnt expectoration on the footpaths in the City. The Finance Committee report that, with reference to the city engineer's notification of his selection of *an articled pupil, that the Council are in no way responsible for engagement or tuition of Mr Thomson, jun. Messi-s Bing, Harris., and Co.'s request for remission of half the general, special, and water rates on Mr Hanis'sr house in High street, which is unocenpied, hus been granted. Mr Jno. Blaikie's request for remission of half rates on bis house iu Hanover street, which has been removed, has been declined.

The Tramways Committee submit the »•- quest that the northern car be again started from the foot of the hill in Princes street, ■with the recommendation that the same be granted. The Committee have no objection to the O.P.Q. mine taking two and a-half heads of water in the Lee Stream. The town clerk has been authorised to act in the following matters: —(1) As to recraest from the' North-east Valley Borough Council for all cars to run through to the terminus at Normanby. (2) In regard t» request from the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal* that the tramcars only stop at street corners for picking up or setting down passenger}, (3) As to offer received of 600 bags (mere or less) of straw chsff, at £3. per ton. (4) With regard to Mr W. D. 6nowbalT« suggestion that certain tramway horses should be sold and others tamed out. The Works Committee recommend that (1) the portion of the roadway through the Town Belt leading to Littlebourae b* formed and metalled at a cost of about ,£2O, provided the Roslvn Borough Council contribute half cost; "(2) the footpath taDawling street in front of Mr Michael Troana property be re-formed and asphalted at a cost of about £10; (3) portion of EWBn* ton load be filled up with spawb, and remetalled, and the gutters on the sides of the roadway formed in a better manner, at a -cost of about £l6, provided the Moraington Borough Council pay half cost; (4) the work in connection with the V«gel street drain be authorised, at a oost ti £24. The city engineer has been instructed to prepare specifications with a view to

ealßng for tenders for No. 1 design for bridge over the Water of Leith in St. David street, the girders for the bridge to be ordered from Messrs W. Coward and Co., of London. The Reserves Committee recommend that owing to the death of Mr C. Clouston, late sexton at the Northern Cemetery, Mr Robertson be appointed vto the position on a. six months' trial. The city engineer has been instructed to report to this meeting of the Council on Mr A. Black's suggestion for using the mill dam as public baths; to prevent nuisance at the tip in the Southern Recreation Reserve, as complained of by theCaversham Borough Council, at a cost of about £5; and to act with the chairman as to the fencing of the reserves on tbe Town Belt at .Mornington, at a cost of about £ls.

The Water Committee report having granted an allowance of 20,000 gal on the water account of Messrs J. M'Gregor and Co., the same having been supplied through meter. The Committee have agreed to the erection of a boundary fence between the Waterworks Reserve and Mr Alex. Ford's property, being section 22, block 3, Blueskin district, at a total cost of £9, the Council being liable for half-cost. The Gas Committee recommend that a Eght lattice overhead traveller be constructed at the city gasworks to enable better means to bo provided for distributing the coke, and thereby save too heavy labor at present required: also that a machine for raising coal bo provided at the gasworks; and that two weighing machines be procured.
