SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

The usual monthly meeting was held in the Town Hall on Monday afternoon. There were present—the Rev. W. Curzon-Siggtrs (vice-president, in the chair), Rev. W. Sinclair, Dr Siedeberg, Mesdames G. Macdonald (treasurer), Withers, and Ansell (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Mr R. Ghisholm, Mesdames Denniston and Wise. A special vote of thanks was passed to Drs Siedeberg and Barnett for special assistance to cases at the request of the society. Subscriptions were received from Mrs Lang, s Mrs Sise, Mrs Morris, and Mr Waddell Smith on behalf of the Reception Committee of the Fourth and Fifth Contingents. The report for the month was a fairly representative one, being a fair index of the society's work. It stated that a paternitv case had been arranged without resort to the courts, with a satisfactory provision for the mother and child. A mother had been provided with means of living where a son was able but unwilling to bear his share. Protection was being secured for a young wife constantly beaten and bitten by her husband. A penniless woman, a widow with a small family, was provided with medical aid. Temporary protection had been secured for a young child, from the neglect of its drunken mother, who also had beaten and bitten it in her drinking bouts. It was further noted that subscriptions were required to carry on the society s work, which was rendered the more difficult because of miscarriages of justice.
