SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

The '.Argus ' reports that the Newmarket Handicap winner Forcßt was one of a bitch of yearlings purchased by the Indo-Aus-tralian trader, Mr Tom Uphill, at Kind, wick, in April, 1895, and coat only 3?J guineas. Mr Uphill, hardly knowing what to do with his purchases, leased the yearling) to Mr S. Miller, and Forest carried the rel and white once or twice unsuccessfully as a two-year-old. While at Redleap Forest was troubled with a bad hock, and returning to Mr Uphill before the expiry of the lease did not run at all during last season, but was given a long spell. This season he was taken in hand by James Lynch, an enthusiastic and painrtaking trainer, for whom he has won i o fewer than six races, all over short courser. Recently Forest was beaten at Epsom aid CaulfieH, and his starting for the Nevmirket Handicap was just a toss-up. Socn after the declaration of the weights the trainer took a bst of 2,000 to 60 about Forest betwesn himself and the owner, Mr Uphill (who is in India), and had it not been for that Forest would have been scratched, as the horse had baen suffering from rheumatism, and had not done much work.

Mr St-ad's team, comprising Multiform, Courtier, and St. Ilario arrived last evening, aod went direct to Wingatui, where thiy will be stationed for the meeting. Shekel wen the Firing Handicap at Akaroa yasterday, putting down a pronounced favorite in Rochester, and piying a dividend of £lB 9j.
