' William O'Brien pleaded guilty at the Auckland criminal sittings on Saturday to the theft of quartz at Uoromandel valued at £426, and was sentence:! to four years' imprisonment. It is understood that Dr MacGregor, Inspector of Charitable Institutions, has refuted to grant a departmental inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Ohiro Home bequests, holding that nothing that has arisen can justify such a course. The Citizens' Band played at the Bo tanical Gardens yesterday, and the Engineers' Band at St. Clair. At the Auckland Supreme Court on Saturday the charge against John 11. Taylor of assaulting a girl under sixteen years of age was dismissed. The girl denied the assault, und when asked to read her depositions in the lower court remained dumb. The Judge said: " You can go; you ought to be ..nshamed of yourself."
