The Philippine rebels have submitted to Spanish authority. The Tasmaniau Legislative Council negatived a motion to continue the Electoral Act to the end of 1898. The vote is the outcome of a strongly-expresEed condemnation of the Hare system of voting. Sir William Macgregor reports that Elliot, Climas, and party have discovered gold giving soz to the dish on the Mambar track, New Guinea. Numbers are leaving Samarai for the locality. The 'Leader' estimates the Victorian wheat crop at 7,053,000 bushels, and after providing for local consumption there remains a surplus of 658,000 bushels. The victim of the murder in Kent, England, is believed to be Wilfrid Atkinson, a deserter from the Sydney Permanent Force, who joined an English artillery regiment, leaving it just prior to the murder. The Rev. Dr Leis'nman has been elected moderator of the Established Church of Scotland, and the Rev. Dr Alexander Whyte has been elected to a similar position in the Free Church of Scotland.
The designs made by Messrs Waterlow and Sons for the new issue of New Zealand postage stamps depict the scenery of the mountains, sounds, geysers, and lakes. Under the convention entered into with Count Cassini, Russian Minister at Pekin, China leases a harbor to Russia whenever required. _ The Premier of Canada is consulting with his colleagues with reference to the American reciprocal proposals. The Government will not consent to any interference with trade relations with Great Britain. It is, however, hoped that some satisfactory settlement of irritating tariff questions may yet be arrived at. Owing to the opposition of Russia to Colonel Schaoffer as Governor of Crete, the latter has abandoned his candidature. The Germans who have been acting in conjunction with the Powers in Crete have now left that island.
