Wellington, November 19.—The first of the series of wool sales was held this afternoon, mere was a large attendance of buyers, but the competition for the bulk of the parcels was not particularly spirited.
PROVIDENT INDUSTRIAL INSURANCE COMPANY. In connection with the announcements of this company in another column we learn from the latest balance-sheet that the total premiums received during the past year amounted to £6.485 10s 2d. being an increase of II per cent, on last year s, and 71 per cent, more than the increase of the industrial premiums of any other company doing business in Australia or New Zealand, and also more than double the average increase of English industrial business. This increase' was obtained at a less cost than the average English industrial business, and at only three-fifths of the cost of the other Australian companies’ increase of !?!) Premiums. The claims aggregated £2,039 3s /d, and included weekly allowances and medical charges under sickness policies: 5 927 new policies have been introduced during the year ..The sum of £967 16s 8d was written off the establishment of agencies extension account and rmture and stationery. The funds at the 30th June were £7,213 3s 3d, being an addition of the assurance fund now stands at ±d,053 12s Bd, representing an increase of 111 per cent. The usual 5 per cent, dividend was declared. The chairman (Mr E. B. Cargill) mentioned, as as indication of the progress now being made, that the increase in the amount of premiums received for the year just entered on—namely, from Ist July—was at the rate of double the increase for the year closed 30th June.
