NORTH-EAST VALLEY. The nominations of two candidates were announced by the returning officer (Mr Arnold) at noon to-day John Evans, proposed by Mr George Calder and Mr John W. Roberts. Joseph E. White, proposed by Mr Charles S. Reeves and Mr James Strang. - Mr Evans, in a short speech, said he considered he had served the borough in tue office of councillor faithfully for the past five years, and that he thought he could perform the. mayoral duties ,iu a way that would prove satisfactory to the ratepayers should they consider him worthy of Their confidence. ' . Mr White was not present. MAORI HILL. John Pollock, nominated; by Messrs A. Herdman and P. Aitken; and William Robertson, nominated by Messrs N. Mills and J. Shrimpton. “ Mr Briggs, I should like to ask you for a small rise in my wages; I have,just been married,” said the workman. Very sorry, my good man,” said the employer ; “ but I can’t help you. For accidents which happen to workmen outside the factory the company are not responsible.”
