_ TO THIS EDITOR. Sir, -r- Seeing that the Corporation's finances arc at a low ebb it behoves the councillors to exercise greater economy in every department; and I think it would be a patriotic action if the four candidates for mayoral honors declared their willingness to fill the chair without pay. lb is rather amusing to hear the mayor remarking that the clerical staff are under paid—l refer to the upper staff. It is the wasteful past that is the main ciuse of the extra rate, which, no doubt, will fall upon the tenants, as property has already plenty of burdens. Query: Why is the dog tax so seldom collected?—l am, etc , _ , Ratepayer. Dunedin, November 6.
