ADELAIDE, October 22. George Gifi'en has announced bis intention of retiring from first class cricket, on the ground that his knee is causing him trouble; but the main cause is the decision with reference to the expenses in connection with the forthcoming English matches. Recently Giffen, Hill, Darling and Jones wrote to Major Wardill demanding a certain sum to cover expenses in the test matches. The negotiations resulted in all excepting Giffen accepting a compromise. Subsequently Giffen wrote to a newspaper stating that he had no intention of playing in the approaching matches or taking part in first, class cricket, as he intended to rest for an indefinite period. Giffen will, however, continue to play in club matches.

The Privateers appealed to have their match with Trinity played again, as two or three players did not go up nfcer seeing notice of postponement.
