TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —A rumor has been current in Dunedin since the election that the Hon. W. D. Stewart wa3 present here for the purpose of assisting the return of the Government candidate. My object in referring to this rumor is to give the Hon. Mr Stewart an opportunity to contradict it. From my long acquaintance with the gentleman, and believing his political principles do not go the length of the present ultra-Liberal party, I look upon the matter as." an invention of the enemy," and an attempt to damage Mr Stewart's good name.—l am, etc., Old Liberal; Dunedin, October 20.
