Barron, Simson, Master Atkinson; and nine steerage. The Cape Palliser light will be shown from Wednesday, October 27. It is 258 ft above the sea—a dioptric revolving white light of the second order. Messrs Arkell and Douglas, of New York, advise us under date August 14 that the barque Agostino Rombo, 807 tons, was on-the berth and to sail on September 11 for Dunedin and Lyttelton ; the barque Samor to sail on August 31 for Wellington and Auckland. The Omapere left Dunedin wharf this afternoon for the West Coast. > The barque G. B. Beverino is clear of cargo. After ballasting she will load for Newcastle. The barque Casa Blanca goes down to Port Chalmers for docking to-morrow. The Rotorua left Dunedin this afternoon for Lyttelton and Wellington.

A remarkably fast run from London to Albany was made on the last trip of the P. and O. Co.'s R. M.S. China. She landed her mails at Albany 23} days from London, and at Adelaide eight days ahead of contract time. This run was. beaten by the Himalaya, of the same line, which steamed from Brindisi to Melbourne (9,228 miles) in -23 d 45min, giving an average speed of 16.69 knots "per hour. The mail steamer Empress of Japan lately made' the fastest passage on record across the Pacific. She left Vancouver on June 26, and arrivedat Hongkong on July 14. after calling at Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Woosung. The voyage was .completed in five days less than schedule time, and an average speed was maintained of over seventeen knots. SIGNALS AT SEA. The new rules of the road at sea have come into force. There are new ruleß as to lights. Articles 12 and 14 are also new. The first enableß a vessel wishing to attract the attention of the look-out on board of an approaching vessel t. do so by means of a flare-up light, or by the use of any detonating signal that cannot be mistaken for a distress signal. According to the second a distinguishing mark is provided for steamers under sail only—steamers, for example, that are unable to use their engines, either from disablement or from want of steam or other mechanical propelling power. Next in order we reach the sound signals for fog, around which so much of the recent struggle has raged. In the form in which it originally left the Washington Conference, Article 15 had a most complicated appearance. As it now stands, the additional signals are reduced to two. The one is "two prolonged blasts for steam vessels under way, but not moving through the water"; the other provides for a "long blast," followed by two short blasts, for vessels towed and towing, vessels not under command, vessels not able to manoouvre as required by the rules, and vessels at work on a telegraph cable." Jt has been argued all along that the last-named signal may lead to uncertainty as to the proper manoeuvres to adopt when it is heard in a fog, mist, falling snow, or heavy rainstorms. If the Bignal Is sounded on a whistle or siren it may come from any of four classes of ships—a steamer towing, a telegraph vessel at work, a steamer not under command (whether making way through the water or not), or a steamer not able to manoeuvre. If, on the other hand, the signal is sounded on a fog-horn, it may. come from any of five classes of vessels—a sailing ship towing, a sailing ship being towed, a steamer being towed, a sailing ship not under command, or a sailing ship unable to manoeuvre. Add to this that vessels when at anchor are required at intervals of not more than one minute to ring a bell rapidly for about five seconds, and captains hearing one or other of all these signals must be prepared to act upon them. Her cargo for Lyttelton consists of 100 cases salmon, 82packages paper; and 9 rases bicycles; and for Port Chalmers 445 cases salmon and 52 packages paper. She brought the following passengers for New Zealand:—Mies Foster, Mesdames Waymouth, Couper, Reekie, and Dow, Messrs Waymouth, Clarke, Couper, Gault, M'Gawn, White, and Evans. She has twenty-nine throueh passengers for Australia, including Lady Tichborne.—The Tongariro arrived at Plymouth on the 13th inst., and the Rakaia at Gravesend on the 14th.
