LONDON, October 8. The weekly returns of the Bank of England published to-day show the total reserve to be £21,583,000, and the proportion of reserve to liabilities 43.56. Three months’ bills are discounted at 2 1-16 per cent. Consols, Illy. Quotations for colonial stocks
Wheat; English shows a general advance of 6d per quarter. Continental is inclined to buoyancy, and American is advancing continuously. The American visible supply of wheat is 31,508,000 bushels. Californian No. 1 milling, 3Ss ; Russian, 35s 6d ; London quotations for hard Duluth, 435.
The wool sales were postponed owing to a fog.
Sugars : Sound German beet, 8s 10id ; Java, 10s l|d. No, 1 best Scotch pig iron (f.o.b. in the Clyde), 44s 7kb The Board of Trade returns for September show that the imports increased in value £2,189,557, while the exports decreased by £1,618,850, compared with the same month last year.
Rabbits firm at Is each. The quotation for silver is 2s 3d per oz.
Russia has the largest military expenses, ,£52,000,000 a year. Britain follows next with £38,000,000; France with £37,000,000; Germany with £26,000,000; Austria. £18,000,000; Italy, £13,000,000. -
