CALCUTTA, October 5. On Sunday last Colonel Jeffreys'."} brigade attacked a strongly fortified place in the Mahmund Valley and destroyed the forts and carried the heights. On the column retiring to camp a great number of tribesmen surrounded the position, and, under perfect cover,, poured a heavy fire upon the brigade. The casualties on the part of the British were, however, not serious.
