WELLINGTON, September 20. _ The Government are being urged to grant licenses for the cutting of sleepers in connection with the Midland Railway contract, but in order to avoid any complications will not come to a decision till the Cabinet have thoroughly considered the matter. It is not settled yet who will second the Address-in-Reply, but Mr C. Wilson, member for the Suburbs, will probably be the mover.
A claim has been served on the Wairarapa South County Council for £l5O, the expense of the licensing election, with an intimation that unless the money is paid a mandamus will be applied for. During the past season 4,606 tons of cheese and 4,566 tons of butter were produced in the colony. Taranaki, Wellington, Otago, and Southland were the principal manufacturers.
