The many friends of Mr M'Cuaig will be pleased to hear of his return to Dunedin (after a long absence) as chief engineer of the s.s. Monowai. The barque Victoria is transhipping cargo to the hulk Thomas and Henry. The barque Njaal will finish taking in cargo to-day. The Moana made the run from Sydney in 3d ISh under easy steam. The vessel was thrown open to the Auckland public last night at 6d admission, the money to be devoted to various local charitable institutions. The Monowai cannot come to town this trip. Passengers for her will proceed to Port Chalmers per 2.30 p.m. train on Monday, instead of from the wharf, as previously advertised. The Mararoa, from Melbourne via Hobart and the Bluff, arrived alongside the George street pier at 7 a.m. to-day. She left Melbourne at 4.20 p.m. on the sth inst., arrived at Hobart at 3.18 a.m. on the 7th, and left again at 4.46 p.m. same day; passed Puysegur Pnint light at 6.30 a.m. on the 10th, and reached the Bluff at 0.50 p.m. same day; left again at 4.30 p.m. on the 11th, and arrived as above. From' Melbourne to Hobart had light variable winds, with fine weather; thence light northerly winds, with moderate sea, to arrival. The Monowai, from Sydney via Wellington and Lyttelton, arrived alongside the Bowen pier at 8 a.m. to-day. She left Sydney at 2.15 p.m. on the sth inst., breasted Cape Farewell at 5.25 a.m. on the 9th. arriving at Wellington at 3 p.m. same day; left again at 5.30 p.m. on the 10th, reached Lyttelton at 8 a.m. on the llth, leaving again at 5.15 p.m. same day, and arrived as above. From Sydney to Wellington she experienced strong southerly and S.E. winds with heavy southerly swell, and from Wellington fine weather. MOVEMENTS OF THE U.S.S.
