BRIEF MENTION.
The arrivals in the colony during November were 1,886, as against 834 departures. There were no Chinese arrivals, while eleven left these shores.
Captain Marciel, of Christchurch, is appointed examiner of masters and mates in the colony. Amended regulations under which a commission in the British Army may be obtained by officers of the colonial local military forces and by students from colonial universities are gazetted. Mr Holland, in retiring from the mayoralty of Auckland, was presented by the Council with a spirit case, salad bowl, and set of carvers, all suitably engraved; while Mrs Holland was presented, through her husband, with a dozen fruit knives and forks. The North Taieri school children came to town by early train to-day and had a holiday on the St. Clair beach.
The Masterton School Committee are protesting to the Wellington Education Board concerning the appointment of teachers as deputy returning officers at the recent General Election.
