MUNCIPAL.
Soirn DfNEnix.—The meeting of this Council, held last night, was attended hy the Mayor (Mr Wardrop), Grs Fisher, Shacklook, Thomas, Fiddts, Holley, M'Kay, and O’Kane. A month’s leave of absence was granted to Cr Marlow on account of illhealth.— The Works Committee reported that the inspector had been instructed to obtain 100 yds of spalls for the Anderson Bay road.
Port Chalmers.— Yesterday's meeting of this Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Watson, juu.), Grs Watson, sen., Allen, Weir. MTnncs, Murray, Pcdlow, Hendry, and Fail, Invcratity. An apology was received from Gr Sutton.—The Water Committee reported that the necessary repairs at the reset voir bad been completed, with the exception of coaling the by-wash with cement. Mr Leach had been engaged to do this work. The Committee recommended that Mr E. Knewstubb, contractor for repairs to the bridge at the reservoir, be granted an extension of time for one week to complete the work, which has been delayed in consequence of bad weather. The report was adooted.
Horseshoes are not known to dale back further than the sixth century. They are found in the tombs of that age throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. In Sweden it is believed that if a bride, during the marriage ceremony, can keep her right foot in advance of the bridegroom's she is destined to secure future supremacy. An eminent London specialist says : “ The best chest protector is worn on the sole of the foot.” A plea is also put in for the wearing of goloshes.
