THE BURNING MINE.
[Per Press Association.] SYDNEY, July 30. There is little change in the condition of the Broken Hill mine. A large amount of smoko is still issuing from the centre, where drills arc being bored to enable water to be poured into the supposed seat of the fire ; but in other parts the volume of smoke has greatly decreased. Several hoses have been stopped, as it is considered that the diminished supply is now sufficient to cope with the flames. Upon the advice of Dr Robertson, a mining expert, the carbonic acid gas which has been prepared will not bo brought into use unless the fire shows, signs of spreading to the open stopes. It is believed that the gas would find its way into parts of the mine untouched by the fire and do much damage. The blasting operations for the purpose of smothering the flames arc being continued, but it is thought that the worst is over, and that though the fire may continue to smoulder for some time it will not spread.
